Founded in 2007, Karsten Architecture Ltd specialises in designing and delivering site specific architectural projects around New Zealand. We offer concept designs and feasibility studies through to planning applications, construction documentation, and contract administration services for both residential and commercial projects.
Our team is passionate about creating environmentally-friendly homes that meet the needs of our clients and we believe that design can have a positive influence for clients, the environment, and society. Successful design is built on supportive and honest partnerships with our clients, and we provide clients with a clear path through the design and build process.

As founder and director of Karsten Architecture Ltd, Tony Karsten is a designer with a unique understanding of both the design and build processes. He spent several formative years in the building industry before training in architecture and this experience gives him a strong practical understanding of construction. Tony enjoys getting to know new clients and his inclusive approach has fostered many long-standing relationships with clients, builders and consultants and results in enjoyable and successful projects. Out of the office he enjoys gardening, cycling and spending time with his family.

Mark has an in-depth knowledge of technical and design aspects of architecture, and he expertly supports the practice with his knowledge of current building regulations issues and all technical aspects of construction. He has helped deliver a wide range of small and detailed as well as large and complex projects through all project phases. Outside of architecture, Mark enjoys spending time with this family in the outdoors especially yachting in Nelson Harbour.

Helena has over 20 years of experience specialising in residential design with additional experience across hospitality and healthcare projects. She works collaboratively with clients, consultants, and contractors to develop thoughtful, practical outcomes tailored to each project. She believes in the power of good design to enhance everyday life, and her approach balances creativity with careful attention to detail—from overall spatial planning through to finely resolved interior and joinery elements. Whether working on new homes, alterations, or additions, Helena aims to create spaces that are functional, well considered, and specific to the people who use them.
